Mahasarathi Card, also called the Family ID, is Maharashtra’s household identity credential. It’s issued through the official portal mahasarathi.maharashtra.gov.in and is used to identify a household as a single unit for accessing state and central government welfare schemes. It isn’t a driving licence and isn’t the same as your Aadhaar or ration card — it’s a separate, household-level ID that sits alongside them.
What does the Mahasarathi Family ID actually do?
It creates one identifier for an entire household rather than treating each family member as a separate, disconnected record. In practice, that’s meant to:
- Make it easier for a family to access welfare schemes and government benefits without repeating documentation for each member
- Give departments a cleaner way to verify who belongs to which household, reducing duplicate or fraudulent scheme claims
- Act as a foundational record that other state services can check against, rather than each one collecting the same family details independently
Is it a physical card?

Not in the traditional sense. The Mahasarathi Family ID is issued as a digital credential — you download it as a PDF from the portal, or fetch it directly into DigiLocker, the Government of India’s digital document wallet. There’s no plastic card mailed to you by the government. If you want a physical, wallet-sized copy to carry, that’s something you’d get printed separately (more on that below).
How to download your Mahasarathi Family ID
There are two official ways to get your copy:
Option 1 — Directly from the portal
- Go to the official portal, mahasarathi.maharashtra.gov.in.
- Log in or verify your identity — Maharashtra government portals of this kind typically use your registered mobile number and an OTP.
- Once verified, look for your family/household profile section, where your Family ID details are listed.
- Use the download option to save your Family ID as a PDF.
Option 2 — Via DigiLocker Maharashtra has integrated the Mahasarathi Family ID with DigiLocker. If you already have a Family ID, you can:
- Open the DigiLocker app or website and sign in.
- Search for Mahasarathi or Maharashtra Family ID under issued documents.
- Give consent to fetch the credential — it will be pulled into your DigiLocker account for future access.
If you don’t have a Family ID yet, DigiLocker also supports applying for one digitally, with your consent, directly through the integration.
A note on PDF passwords: several Maharashtra government document downloads are password-protected using a formula based on your name and date of birth, but this varies by document and department — the exact format isn’t publicly standardised across all portals the way, say, Aadhaar’s is. If your downloaded Mahasarathi PDF asks for a password, check the instructions shown on the download page itself, since that’s the authoritative source for that specific document.
Do I need my Mahasarathi Card for anything urgent?
Usually not for day-to-day identification — Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID, and driving licence remain your primary ID documents for banks, travel, and most verification needs. The Family ID mainly matters when you’re applying for a state welfare scheme that specifically asks for it. If a scheme application requests your Family ID, that’s the situation where having it downloaded and handy actually matters.

Want a physical, durable copy?
Since the Mahasarathi Family ID exists only as a PDF or DigiLocker record, some people prefer having a wallet-sized, waterproof copy on hand instead of hunting for the PDF every time — the same way people get their Aadhaar or ABHA card printed onto PVC. If that’s what you’re after, we print your already-downloaded Mahasarathi Family ID onto a durable PVC card, credit-card sized, from ₹49. This is a reprint of your existing digital credential for convenience — it isn’t a government-issued document and doesn’t replace your official Family ID or DigiLocker record.
